As a Repair the World Intern at Hillel at the University of Washington, you will spend time at the UW and around Seattle creating volunteer opportunities and connecting the Jewish community to meaningful service. You will connect with the estimated 2,500 other Jewish students at UW and build relationships with your peers. You will receive training as a community organizer and learn what it takes to effectively lead and inspire your peers, choosing from Service, Advocacy, Alternative Breaks, or Outreach for your focus.

NHC Summer Institute

Join the National Havurah Committee for their annual Summer Institute, a “unique opportunity for serious study, moving prayer, spirited conversation, late-night jam sessions, singing, dancing, swimming, meditation, and hiking — all in the company of more than 300 people from a wide range of backgrounds.”

It will be held August 1-7 at Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire and the 2011 theme is “Y’hi Shalom B’cheilech – May There Be Peace Within Your Walls” (Psalm 122).

Leadership 1000 Scholarship

The Leadership 1000 Scholarship Program provides college scholarships to deserving students who need assistance attending a four-year college or university in Washington State. Scholarships may be up to $5,000 a year for four-years for a total of $20,000.

While the Leadership 1000 program is open to everyone, there is a special scholarship available for Jewish college students. The application is not found on the College Success Foundation website but is available through Hillel, so let us know if you’re applying and click the link below for more information!

CAMERA Fellowship

The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA) seeks committed undergraduate students with excellent communication skills who can organize pro-Israel events on campus. Students earn $1000 and travel to Israel when they become CAMERA Fellows Representatives.

CAMERA Fellows Reps will:

• Organize 3-4 programs during the school year

• Monitor and respond to articles in the campus and local press
• Write Op-Eds and letters to the editor

• Create a network of media activists

• Distribute CAMERA magazines and literature
• Participate in regular calls with other CAMERA Fellows Reps and CAMERA staff
• Travel to Israel for intensive leadership training

Gain valuable experience while defending Israel on your campus.

Hasbara Fellowships

Hasbara Fellowships is now accepting applications for Campus Coordinators for the 2011-2012 school year.

Campus Coordinator positions are part-time and can be held by university students or recent graduates with demonstrated leadership in Israel activism. Positions are available in cities including: Boston, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, San Diego, Toronto, Montreal, Seattle and Vancouver.

The responsibilities of these positions include:

Working with Hasbara Fellows and other pro-Israel activists to plan and execute effective Israel advocacy strategies on campus
Educating students about Israel’s history, current achievements and challenges, and how to effectively communicate for Israel
Recruiting top student activists for the Hasbara Fellowships training program in Israel
Depending on the size of the region, the Campus Coordinator position requires approximately 8-15 hours per week during the school semester.

Additional Information:

Campus Coordinators are frequently invited to staff the training program in Israel, participate in forums for assessing campus trends, and represent Hasbara Fellowships nationally. This position includes a stipend, as well as expenses covered (including the Israel program, if participating.)

Applicants should be student leaders or recent graduates with significant Israel activism experience and strong knowledge of international politics (particularly concerning the Middle East).

Yahel Social Change Program

Graduating in June & not sure what to do next fall? Apply to volunteer in Israel with the Yahel Social Change Program!

The Yahel Social Change Program is an exciting 5-month service-learning experience for young adults between the ages of 21 and 27. The program is based in the town of Gedera, Israel, and combines hands-on volunteer work with in-depth learning and immersion. Yahel participants live, volunteer and learn alongside Ethiopian-Israeli young adults from the community. Substantial grants and scholarships are available through Masa Israel Journey.

Hillel UW is one of 10 Hillels nationwide to receive a grant from Hillel’s International Center to help develop a new model for our student leadership program!!! The International Center will be sending 8 student leaders to the Hillel Institute, a national conference to help our student leaders develop their leadership skills.

The students selected for this unique opportunity will serve as leaders at Hillel UW; throughout their year as Hillel Leaders, an emphasis will be placed on the following:

Personal leadership development — participation in twice-monthly meetings and opportunities to learn from Hillel staff and local leaders.
Relationship building — creating and maintaining relationships with other student leaders at UW
Community organizing — getting your friends and other students involved in Hillel’s programs
Programming – working with other leaders and students to implement new, creative programs at Hillel
Professional development — opportunities to attend additional professional conferences nationwide

This is a really great opportunity to build your resume & professional skills!

Please note:
If accepted into this program, you will be required to attend the Hillel Institute, an all-expenses-paid leadership conference in St. Louis, MO, August 3-7, 2011.

If you cannot attend the Hillel Institute, we still encourage you to apply as there will be additional opportunities for student leadership over the summer (think: Dawg Days!) and throughout next year.

We’re having an open meeting (everyone is welcome!) to discuss the future of student leadership, including: leadership positions, free travel to national conferences, and information on how to get involved!

Help the Hillel Library

Hillel has a library of Jewish texts, history, biographies, etc. written in English and some in Hebrew. We need a volunteer to catalogue (we have a computerized system) books and keep the library organized. A knowledge of Hebrew is helpful but we can solicit additional help if necessary for translation purposes. A library science background is nice but a general interest is sufficient. If you can contribute to this need of Hillel we would be most appreciative.

Urban Farming Fellowship

Urban Adamah is a 3-month intensive residential leadership training program for young adults ages 20-29, that integrates urban organic farming, social justice work and progressive Jewish living and learning. Twelve Urban Adamah Fellows are selected each season to operate an organic farm and educational center, intern with community organizations addressing issues at the intersection of poverty, food security and environmental stewardship.

Admission to Urban Adamah is rolling. The next round of applications will be reviewed starting April 10, 2011 for the summer season, and May 1, 2011 for the fall season.
